Spotlight: NPPF sets out new planning rules, West Midlands buses go public and warning over UK gas supply

This week has seen the government publish a revision of the National Planning Policy Framework, restructuring national planning policy and strengthening the presumption in favour of sustainable development. The changes give greater weight to housing delivery, Grey Belt land and strategic infrastructure including energy, data centres and transport-linked development.

The implications for developers are significant, and the revised framework creates clearer, firmer routes to consent for schemes that align with growth objectives, particularly around transport hubs and infrastructure capacity. Combined with a stronger expectation of early stakeholder engagement, this could create a more predictable and favourable pipeline of opportunities for housing, energy and infrastructure projects across England, though familiar challenges with political and community stakeholders will remain.

The Government has been warned that the UK could face gas supply shortages in the 2030s unless action is taken to strengthen energy security as domestic North Sea production continues to decline. The warning reflects growing concern that, while demand for gas is expected to fall over time, the UK will remain reliant on gas for heating, industry and electricity generation for decades.
